It's time to retire.

There are many factors that contribute to General Hospital fans' disappointment with the quality of the writing. It didn't start a month or two ago, but has been a constant problem for several years, making it harder and harder to watch the show.

With so many good characters leaving and so many boring storylines dragging on for weeks, General Hospital is no longer the soap opera it once was. And while there's no quick way to undo all that's been ruined, there are some changes that fans believe would work to the show's advantage. Letting go of Sonny Corinthos is one of them.

When Did Maurice Benard Join General Hospital?

It's safe to assume that for many people, Maurice Benard's name is forever tied to his life-changing role as Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital. The actor originated the role more than 30 years ago, back in 1993, and remains one of the show's most enduring characters.

Through the years in Port Charles, Sonny has established his own order and has a tight net of criminals around him. He has also had a few romances and fathered a dozen children by various women. Thanks to Benard's experience and determination, Sonny Corinthos has also become a representation of bipolar disorder that so many fans have longed for.

A character of his caliber cannot be replicated, but General Hospital must find a way, and soon.

While the ABC soap could probably create a more mysterious and threatening presence for Sonny if it wanted to, the show isn't rushing to do so. Instead, they're paying too much attention to storylines that make Sonny look weak, like this ongoing feud with Dex. And the fans are not buying it.

If Sonny were as powerful as General Hospital wants to make him out to be, there wouldn't be this endless discussion about his intentions, because he'd have the right people to take Dex out for him, no questions asked. Showing him sneaking behind the bench in his comfortable sneakers and T-shirt isn't the best way to show his toughness either.

Without a mobster in Sonny's position, too many of General Hospital's storylines will fall apart. But the longer the show tries to convince its viewers that Sonny is still the man he was 30 years ago, the more annoyed they'll get. So it would only be fair to bring in someone to take over his business.

If you are interested to see where General Hospital will take the residents of Port Charles, be sure to tune in Monday through Friday on ABC to not miss another episode.
