D&D’s questionable Season 8 writing aside, the Lannister brothers only lived because one of them managed to melt a cynical sellsword’s heart years ago.

Summary:

  • When Bronn worked for Jaime Lannister, they had some camaraderie going but generally had issues with each other.
  • Tyrion Lannister, on the other hand, became Bronn’s first real friend, and the cynical mercenary valued his company.
  • When Cersei hired Bronn to kill her brothers, the only reason the sellsword didn’t do it right away was that he would have hated killing Tyrion.

Bronn might have been one cynical and unhinged mercenary, but he had some loyalty and decency in him. Deep inside, that is. So deep that even he must have been thoroughly surprised when he uncovered them, but that’s life for you. Ironically, it was one of the two brothers he was ordered to kill that had awoken them in Bronn.

Bronn Got To Serve Both Jaime And Tyrion

Thanks to Bronn’s unique combinations of skills, moral flexibility, and sense of humor, he found his way into the service of both the Lannister brothers at some points in time. However, his relationship with Jaime and Tyrion was very different.

While Bronn and Jaime had some camaraderie with each other, they often had to tolerate each other. Jaime complained about Bronn’s lack of respect and subordination; Bronn complained that Jaime underpaid him and was too serious. In the end, the sellsword simply left the older Lannister’s service after the dragon attack.

Tyrion, on the other hand, became the first true friend for Bronn. The two of them spent their free time together, enjoyed each other’s company, shared their life stories, and indulged in their friendship. Bronn addressed Tyrion as his equal without the fear of being fired or punished, and stayed even when Tyrion couldn’t pay him.

Unlike with Jaime, Bronn left Tyrion’s service only under dire circumstances. He came in person to tell Tyrion that he wouldn’t fight the Mountain for him, and they even hugged each other in the end. Bronn saved himself, but it clearly pained him.

Bronn And Tyrion’s Friendship Saved The Lannisters

Long after the mercenary had left both Tyrion and Jaime’s service, Bronn was hired by Queen Cersei to kill them. The sellsword took the job and caught the Lannister brothers by surprise; he seemed intent on finishing the job, aiming a crossbow at them. However, he was just as easily convinced to change his loyalties and ditch Cersei.

The fact that he demanded several huge rewards for sparing them was merely Bronn’s nature.

The fact that he didn’t mind Jaime’s company didn’t help much. But it was the mercenary’s unlikely friendship with Tyrion Lannister that made him speak to the Lannister brothers instead of quietly taking them out and leaving in the first place.

Bronn would have really hated killing his only real friend. He would have done it if left with no other choice, mind you, but he would have drunk himself to death after that.
