Game of Thrones Fans Are Still Furious Over Jon Snow's Ending
The final season of Game of Thrones prompted mixed reactions from viewers.
The most popular opinion from fans was that it felt rushed, leading to unsatisfying conclusions about the stories of their favourite characters. Author George R.R. Martin, the genius behind the books and the main writer for the first six seasons of the TV series, has made no secret of the fact that he wanted more time to wrap up the stories more thoroughly.
Alas, it was not to be as the decision-makers insisted on there being only one more season. This led to an inevitable scramble in the writers' room to come up with "endings" for everyone in a much shorter timeframe.
Some characters had their tales wrapped up in ways that appeased the fans. Arya, Tyrion, Sansa, Ser Davos, and even Bronn are given worthy endings according to the audience.
But the list of characters with disappointing endings is far longer. Viewers have cited Cersei, Jaime, Daenerys, Bran, Yara, Grey Worm, Brienne, and the mighty Drogon as having terrible endings. But the one person whose conclusion has incited the most fury from fans has been Jon Snow.
Fans feel like his story was being built up to become King. Despite his obvious lack of wanting for such a position, as evidenced by his reluctance to take up the mantle of King in the North, nobody was more worthy of the Iron Throne than he was. Well, not that there was an Iron Throne by the end, but aside from that…
Jon was the rightful heir by blood. He was a Targaryen by birth, and as the only living male in the bloodline, the throne should have been his.
As if that wasn't enough reason in that world for him to be given the crown, Jon has proven himself to be a true hero. Uniting the north and south against the White Walkers, enlisting Daenerys' help to conquer their mutual enemy, he gathered everyone together which ultimately saw the humans achieve victory over the ice zombies.
Yet after he does the noble thing and lets Dany lay claim to the throne, he is then forced to kill her to save the realm when she reveals the extent of her vicious insanity. And how is he rewarded?
By being sent straight back to the Night's Watch. Some argue that is what Jon wanted all along, feeling at home in the far north. But most are furious at how he was treated, for being the only character throughout the entire series that consistently did the right thing.
Hopefully, the planned series for Jon Snow will provide him with a more worthy ending to his story.
