Friends' Iconic My Eyes Scene Is Actually a Remake
Remember the scene from season 5 of Friends when Phoebe sees Chandler and Monica hooking up through the window and screams, "My eyes, my eyes!"? Lisa Kudrow borrowed that now-iconic line from a certain castmate!
In a 2020 interview for Variety, Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow had a little Friends reunion of their own (we should have suspected something right then and there) and talked about their experiences on the set of the hit show.
Interestingly, Lisa shared how the "My Eyes" scene came about, and it is not what you'd expect!
If you thought that you heard a familiar tone in Lisa's voice, you wouldn't be wrong! The actress borrowed it from Matthew Perry himself (she even asked his permission before filming it!).
The actor was "OK with it" and told Kudrow to "go for it," which is why we have what we have.
Coincidentally, it wasn't just Chandler's tone that Lisa copied, but the entire line word-by-word! In the season 1 episode, The One with the Butt, Joey's mom calls, but Chandler picks up the phone instead of Joey.
Being a good roommate, Chandler goes to find Joey, who is currently in the bathroom doing something (apparently traumatizing), and stops at nothing – not even at Monica's warning.
Chandler comes in and then quickly storms out of the bathroom, screaming, "My eyes, my eyes!" Sound familiar?
This scene came first, although it is not as famous as Phoebe's rendition four seasons later (so remakes can actually be better than the originals?).
Some fans disagree with Lisa, saying that she "didn't quite do it like Matthew, she kinda Phoebed it up" (and we think it's beautiful!).
Well, as long as everyone was on board with the way the scene came together, does it really matter?
Anyway, it is kind of amazing that we still get to find out these fascinating little details from the show, even though it ended almost 20 years ago!
Who knows what we might learn at another reunion, maybe 10 years later, right? We can't wait!
