While an undeniably iconic character and integral part of Friends, Ross Geller was often overlooked when it came to his backstory: facts just never added up as the seasons went on.

Friends has been running for over 10 years, and for such a lengthy show, mistakes were bound to happen from time to time. Sometimes, writers change or forget something, and it’s alright — but in some cases, like this one, the sheer number of slips, inconsistencies, and directly confronting statements was mildly infuriating.

This specifically applies to Ross Geller and his backstory. While Ross was quite a central character even among the six leads of Friends, the writers kept messing up whenever it came to anything involving numbers in Ross’s past. At this point, no one truly knows anything about Ross Geller, even the rest of the gang — save for the fans!

For instance, Ross’s birthday seems to be migrating all across the calendar year from season to season. In S4, Ross tells Gunther that his birthday is in December — and in S9, he suddenly informs Joey that he was born in October. He also once announced that his birthday was in March… It’s a basic lead character fact, people!

Another thing that is jumping back and forth wildly is how long Ross was married to his first wife, Carol. According to Chandler, they were together for 4 years; Joey said their marriage lasted for 7 years; and Ross himself claimed that they were married for 9 whole years. What an interesting relationship these two must have had!

Don’t even start us on how Ross wasn’t aging for four seasons straight! He was claiming to be 29 years old for several seasons before finally becoming a 30-year-old gentleman, and we can't help but feel like people are not supposed to work this way.

We all love Friends, but these inconsistencies are quite weird when it comes to a show with only six (!) main characters. Barely anyone would’ve noticed if Janice’s age was different — but not remembering Ross Geller’s age is just nonsense.
