Forget Shaun of the Dead, a Smarter Zombie Comedy Just Landed on Netflix
Its high-class humor is obviously far from being dead!
Back in 2004, the world saw Simon Pegg-starring hit movie that obviously set the bar high for so-called zom coms. Combined with the success of Cillian Murphy ’s 28 Days Later ( 2002), it inspired filmmakers to speculate more on zombie apocalypses.
Indeed, you may have seen Nicholas Hoult’s Warm Bodies or Brad Pitt’s World War Z (both 2013) that were box office bangers at the time, but there was another movie that blended zombie horror, action and humor even better than Pegg’s comedy.
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, this flick shows that most people have turned into zombies who threaten to kill the surviving ones, with four of them teaming up to confront the hungry monsters.
They gradually learn how to fight with small groups of zombies, but, nevertheless, it’s too dangerous to stay in the east. That’s why the team decides to travel across America to find a rumored safe haven in Los Angeles, and this road trip promises a wild ride.
This comedy gave a completely different perspective to zombie movies, as it has the ‘rules’ leitmotif in it. The point is the film’s running gag is the list of hilarious, yet inventive rules the protagonists use for surviving in the zombie-infested world. It makes our expectations deceived, as the majority of zombie flicks have sillier leads.
By obeying the rules, the unforgettable characters totally break the genre’s canon. Their greatness is enhanced by the performances of the all-star cast that assembles Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and, moreover, Bill Murray in a funny cameo.
Titled Zombieland, this 2009 flick is truly a must-watch not only for those who enjoy movies about zombie apocalypses, but for all lovers of good old comedies.
The 89%-rated zom com is claimed to be perfectly written (and be sure there are some razor-sharp dialogues and top-notch jokes in it), and uniquely directed.
