5. Anna Turner

Though she didn’t have too much time on the show, Anna Turner did have quite an impact on Chicago Fire ’s central character. Turner was briefly Kelly Severide’s girlfriend and one of the most dramatic losses of his life. They first met when he donated his bone marrow to her, and after a short but sweet time together, Anna died from leukemia even though they thought she’d defeated it. Kelly was devastated.

4. Benjamin Severide

Another huge hit for Kelly Severide on the screen and the Chicago Fire cast in real life, the tragic death of actor Treat Williams saw his character die from a stroke. Kelly’s father, Benny Severide was a proud former firefighter and Chief Boden’s friend in One Chicago, and a great mentor and friend to other actors. Benny’s death hit everyone hard and impacted many people, especially Kelly and Chief Boden.

3. Evan Hawkins

A double-edged character, Evan Hawkins was also a loss on two accounts. First, many fans genuinely liked him and thought he was becoming one of the central characters. Second, not too long before his tragic death in the line of duty, Hawkins finally got together with Violet Mikami, and they were happy. For Violet, it was a tragedy of love, and for the audience, it was sad seeing another great character go.

2. Brian Zvonecek

No one ever called Brian Zvonecek by his official name: for everyone in the firehouse, he was just good ol’ Otis — and for fans, too. For the longest time, Otis was a fan favorite. His likable personality and genuine positivity made him a ray of sunshine in the otherwise grim and serious work of firefighters. When Otis died after the mattress factory fire incident, his colleagues and fans were devastated.

1. Leslie Shay

On par with Otis, Shay was also among the most beloved Chicago Fire characters. But she also wins another sad award — for being with us for too little: Shay lasted barely two seasons and had that main character energy. People wanted to see her grow and prosper, but in the finale of Season 2, she died in a partial building collapse, breaking many hearts on both sides of the screen.
