Emily in Paris: Return of the Cringe-Fest You (And Everyone Else) Hate But Watch Anyway
Emily in Paris has been repeatedly criticized as one of Netflix's most stereotypical and unrealistic shows, and still it's got magic that draws everyone back to their screens.
On Wednesday, the third season of Emily in Paris premiered on Netflix, making everyone question their life choices and wonder why do they even continue to watch the show that is nothing but a cringe festival and a stereotype ensemble.
For several seasons in a row, Lily Collins' Emily has been defiling through her picture perfect life in Paris, surrounded by lacklustre Parisians who judge people, eat croissants, and look like they only exist in magazine covers. When it comes to other cultures' representation, from English to Ukrainian, it is all based on stereotypes and is hardly believable.
Yet, everyone is sat for the premiere and rooting for Emily to end up either with Alfie (a cynical British banker from City), or Gabriel (a charming French chef whose main character trait is... being charming).
What do they get? The very same parade of unauthentic stuff the first two seasons are notorious for.
"And so EmilyInParis begins. With Emily wearing bright green knee high hooker boots that literally nobody in their right mind French, American, or otherwise would be caught dead wearing in Paris let alone over their morning coffee. Here we go again..." Twitter user AndreaMDarcy sighed.
Others have already dubbed first episodes of the third season "a game that you play where you meet characters and have to do missions" for how predictable and scripted they feel.
Another thing that has been honored with the title of the third season's "first cringe moment" is how the show conveniently described McDonalds as "chic." Yes, this is the very show that spent two seasons making us fall in love with Gabriel, who specializes in exquisite cuisine.
However, the appeal that Emily in Paris has is pretty easy to explain. Despite the fact that no one wears high boots in Paris or begins every single day with a lazy morning coffee and a croissant, we all... want to. And Emily in Paris delivers that little escapism treat every time. Besides, the good old love triangle has never failed to work — so why should it this time?
Emily in Paris season 3 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
