Some fans, however, think that they should've been the endgame.

It is no secret to fans that Ellen Pompeo, who has played the role of Meredith Grey on Grey's Anatomy since 2005, has always had a say in what goes on in Meredith's life.

Now that the actress serves as an executive producer on the show, that explains her strong influence throughout the seasons.

What viewers may not know about her decisions is that she wasn't a big fan of Meredith's love interests after Derek Shepherd's death.

Back in 2018, Pompeo gave an extensive interview to The Hollywood Reporter, where she explained how she was introduced to the decision to bring another man into Meredith Grey's life.

Essentially, the decision was made without her, but she did have a say in who would be a good fit. Needless to say, Pompeo wasn't too thrilled:

"The truth is, the ink wasn't even dry on his exit papers before they rushed in a new guy. I was like, "Are you people f#cking nuts? Why do you feel that you have to replace this person?" I couldn't believe how fast the studio and the network felt like they had to get a penis in there," the actress shared.

As sharp as Pompeo's judgment is, the disappointment is understandable. Many fans had similar feelings about Meredith's rushed romance with Dr. Nathan Riggs.

However, now that many years have passed and Grey has had several other partners over the seasons, it looks like Riggs may have been the only right choice for her.

"Rewatching all the Riggs and Grey episodes and comparing them to everyone else Meredith has been with since Derek, it's so clear that her best match and her best chemistry was with Riggs," Redditor boygirlmama said.

Since the post got hundreds of upvotes, it's safe to say that Meredith/Nathan had more fans in the audience than the producers thought.

"Too soon" may have been the only problem with them not being an endgame.
