El Muerto Proves Once Again That Sony's Villains Universe Is Doomed
The movie about the obscure Spider-Man villain has been pulled from the release schedule, and fans believe it may be canceled altogether.
Just as the first trailer for Kraven the Hunter was released a few days ago, leaving fans with mixed feelings, a new update regarding Sony's Spider-Man universe may further indicate the poor state the cinematic universe is currently in.
El Muerto, starring Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny as the titular anti-hero, has apparently been pulled from the studio's release schedule.
It seems that the musician's tight schedule and the ongoing WGA strike were the reasons behind the decision, although the film is still in development.
It is supposed to be the first time a Latino character will be at the center of a Marvel movie, and after the creators were impressed by Bad Bunny's appearance in 2022's Bullet Train, he was cast in the lead role.
In the comics, El Muerto is the son of a luchador who received enhanced abilities from a mythical mask and has faced off against Spider-Man on several occasions.
Fans say that this perfectly shows how much of a mess Sony's "villains" universe is right now, and believe that the movie may be quietly canceled altogether later.
According to them, the whole deal is doomed to fail because literally no one is expecting the movie because of how obscure the character is.
Moreover, Sony's films have proven time and again that Spider-Man's adversaries are not the best material to transform from pure villains to anti-heroes, and that they are not interesting without the involvement of the iconic superhero.
Even Venom, arguably the most complex and intriguing Spider-Man villain, struggles to make sense in a world without Spider-Man, since much of the symbiote's story revolves around his encounter with Peter.
Both the organism itself and its most famous host, Eddie Brock, hold personal grudges against Spidey, and the exclusion of this element significantly damaged the character, turning the films into comedic buddy movies.
Moreover, as the trailer for Kraven the Hunter suggested by showing a new version of Rhino, the "villains" universe is different from the "Amazing" one, starring Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, shattering fans' theories.
So it is obvious that we will not see the villains clash with the iconic hero anytime soon, which could have improved their stories, even if only a little.
