Early Oscar 2025 Predictions Say Dune: Part 2 May (Or May Not) Steal the Show
Denis Villeneuve’s new box office hit fans are already weighing in film chances for the next Oscars — a year ahead of the ceremony.
Summary:
- Dune: Part 2 is being discussed in every corner of the media community while some fans are already analyzing the film’s chances for the Oscars awards next year.
- Denis Villeneuve’s new blockbuster may receive several major nominations next year — including (maybe) Best Director, Best Actor or Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
- The main issue with “Dune: Part 2” is that it was released in March and not in the second half of the year like most of the Oscar nominated pictures are.
Dune: Part 2 may have been released in cinemas only a couple of weeks ago, but so far has managed to spark quite a brouhaha in the international community.
With a star-packed cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh the film actually caught everyone’s attention long before its theatrical premiere. Now, when the first enthusiastic reviews are in, cinema lovers start predicting if the movie will be able to sweep the next awards season.
For example, Reddit fans are already more than involved in a discussion concerning the next year Oscars ceremony (which is quite speedy considering that the 2024 ceremony was held just a week ago).
Keeping in mind that Dune: Part 1 took home six awards from the 2022 Oscars, it raises a thought that the chances for the sequel are also quite high.
Fans on social media suggested that Dune: Part 2 be at least nominated for Best Visual Effects, Best Actor (Timothée Chalamet), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (there are many options), Best Makeup, Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Rebecca Ferguson), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
However, the film still has much bigger chances, according to the fans, for the nominations like Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Director (Denis Villeneuve) and Best Original Score.
And even though Dune: Part 2 awards future seems quite promising, there’s only one detail that could impede it. As known in the cinematography world, the Oscar-nominated films are usually (and even better say traditionally) released at the end of the year — mostly in autumn and early winter.
While there are several exceptions — like July-released Barbie and Oppenheimer, the latter being the biggest triumphant this awards season — they still receive their theatrical premiere in the second half of the year and not earlier, like in Dune: Part 2 case.
Still, the Academy choice for Denis Villeneuve’s new film seems quite controversial as some fans claim that “the Academy is not that much into blockbusters,” but in this case we also deal with a plot full of deep meaning about religion and politics.
So far nothing is obviously certain and we can only suppose what the future will hold for Dune: Part 2.
