Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi Refuses To Return In a Sweetest Way Possible
Let’s try again for the 70th anniversary.
Summary:
- Doctor Who is a British sci-fi drama that has been on the air since 1963.
- The show suggests that the Doctor can regenerate and take forms of different humans, hence many various actors may portray the leading character through years.
- Peter Capaldi was the 12th regeneration of the Doctor, but declined the idea of returning for the role again.
One of the best things about Doctor Who is that, despite decades of lore, you are always welcome, no matter when you join. Of course, it's great to revisit the series and learn more about different Doctors, their companions, and their adventures, but whenever and whoever you join, it becomes your most special one.
That is the bond that many Whovians share as they choose their favorite Doctor incarnation from the 15 existing ones. For American Doctor Who fans, however, the choice is usually smaller. Since the show only became big in the U.S. with Matt Smith 's era as the 11th Doctor, not many people know all the previous Doctors, except for David Tennant.
What everyone does know, however, is how difficult the transition between Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi has been, and how the fandom's opinion of the actor's portrayal of the Doctor has changed drastically over the years. Now, the fandom can't get over the idea of bringing Peter Capaldi back, but Capaldi himself doesn't seem too enthusiastic about the idea.
Will The 12th Doctor Return In Doctor Who
The recent 60th anniversary of the show, which has been celebrated through three special episodes starring David Tennant, has given the writers an easy way out of writing more multiple-doctor stories. Of course, the viewers’ minds instantly turned to those Doctors who they would actually want to come back, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi included.
Speaking to Forbes about his most recent release, Criminal Record, Capaldi couldn’t avoid a Doctor Who-related question as well. However, the answer didn’t match the expectations the majority of fans had:
“I'm a long-standing Doctor Who fan from being a kid. Haggerty is the same age as me, so maybe he watched Doctor Who, too. He’s of that era. I like the idea that my Doctor is still out there. He's not available to come and be on TV. The real Doctor is not on TV, the real Doctor is out there,” the actor said.
Unfortunately for all the fans of the 12th Doctor, it isn’t likely for us to see Capaldi making friends with aliens and saving the world alongside Ncuti Gatwa anytime soon. On the other hand, for as long as fandom’s imagination is creative enough to come up with adventures for the Doctor to take on, the universe will now allow any crossover that’ll come to mind.
Doctor Who will return to our screens with the first official season of Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor later in 2024. Make sure to keep an eye out for all behind-the-scenes news and updates to not miss a thing!
