Cillian Murphy’s Biggest Flop With 33% Tomatometer Suddenly Tops Netflix’s Movie Chart
Not everything was that good before Oppenheimer came along.
Summary:
- Cillian Murphy cemented his status of one of Hollywood’s best actors with his high-rated historical drama Oppenheimer last year, but the actor’s failure movie from 2019 is getting much more attention now as it’s recently reached Netflix ’s top.
- The action thriller directed by Luc Besson follows a Russian assassin chased by spy agents that aren’t aware of her tricky plans to get her freedom back.
- The movie was a big disaster in the box office and didn’t impress the critics, yet received quite a warm welcome from the audience which is being confirmed by its domination on Netflix right now.
Cillian Murphy is Hollywood’s biggest star since he swept everyone away with his stunning performance in Christopher Nolan ’s Oppenheimer and even took home an Oscar for it — but back in 2019 not everything worked out that well for him.
The actor seemingly had high hopes — and he had all the reasons for it — for one of his movies that turned out to be a big theatrical flop. Despite that, the film is somehow doing better five years later — and recently has even entered Netflix’s top.
Back in the day, French director Luc Besson made his classic come-back with an action thriller Anna. The plot follows young Russian woman Anna, an assassin pursued by CIA and KGB agents competing with each other while Anna herself is planning to thwart their biggest ambitions, embarking on a search for personal freedom.
Anna was indeed the director’s biggest hope — with the star-studded cast including Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy and Helen Mirren and the compelling plot full of the real action, the movie was supposed to be a brand new phenomenon embracing all the best from Besson’s hits like Léon: The Professional or The Fifth Element.
Despite all the expectations, Anna became a box office disaster grossing only $31 million with the initial budget of $30 million.
Though the movie didn’t do well in the cinemas and with critics who gave it a miserable score of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, the viewers weren’t on the same side and boosted the audience score right up to a solid 81% making the gap between professionals and amateurs just insane.
Now that Anna has landed on Netflix, it seems like the viewers’ delight has always been there — and it’s being confirmed by the film’s number one position in Netflix’s Top 10 in the US.
Such an unexpected ascent may be due to the star-packed cast in general, but also to Cillian Murphy in particular whose international fame got even wider after his triumphant win at the latest Oscar ceremony.
