There’s always a chance things won’t work out.

Even if your favorite TV show gets another year to explore the characters and add more stories to their journey, it's still too early to celebrate. Fans of One Chicago learned this lesson firsthand when all three shows let some of their most beloved actors go and wrote off their characters.

For all Chicago P.D. fans, the most devastating exit was that of Tracy Spiridakos' Hailey Upton. A series regular since the end of season 4, she stayed through season 11, leaving a gaping hole in the hearts of viewers.

Why Did Tracy Spiridakos Leave Chicago P.D?

It's safe to say that Detective Hailey Upton has become the heart and soul of Chicago P.D. over the years. Viewers have seen her rise and fall several times, become invested in her character, and rooted for her until the very end.

The decision to bring her character's story to a close was made by Tracy Spiridakos, who wanted to explore other acting opportunities after spending 7 years in the One Chicago universe. The viewers have already decided on Bojana Novakovic’s Josephine Petrovic being the perfect person to take over now, however, it’s not that simple.

Speaking to TVLine, the showrunner cautioned fans not to jump to conclusions too fast. For now, Upton's spot remains open, and there is no way to tell who will fill it, no matter how obvious viewers' preferences may be.

“We don’t know yet. We get back in the [writers] room next week, and there’s a lot that we’re going to figure out. But I loved Petrovic on the show this season. I think that [Bojana Novakovic] was such a pro and she made [the role] her own. There’s so much depth to that character and it was acted wonderfully,” she said.

Fortunately, there isn't much more time left to wait. With the writers' room set to return to work next week, One Chicago fans can expect to hear the news fairly soon. With production finally back on track and on the schedule we all know and love, the new season of Chicago P.D. is expected to air this fall.

However, if you are already missing Detective Hailey Upton too much and want to turn back the clock to relive some of her best moments throughout the show, be sure to stream Chicago P.D. starting season 1 on NBC.com, Peacock or Prime Video.
