Bridgerton’s Eloise Actress Says Yes to a Queer Love Story For Her Character
She's not like everyone else in the family, so maybe her love story will be different too?
Cinema is full of classic stories, retold year after year in the traditional manner or reimagined by the daring ones. Whether it's adaptations of literary masterpieces, biopics, or other attempts to turn established archetypes on their heads, a spirit of rebellion is essential.
For lovers of the flair of Jane Austen's novels, Bridgerton is a real feast. London's high society and debutante balls all seem like a refuge for humble young ladies with dreams of marriage. In fact, just like in Austen's novels, revolutionaries still roam England during the Regency era.
In the Netflix series, this honorable role goes primarily to Eloise Bridgerton, the fifth child of the family, who never lets go of books and despises patriarchal foundations.
Claudia Jessie Shares Her Thoughts on a Queer Love Story for Eloise
We have yet to see Eloise's love story, as fans hope in season five – right after Benedict's. And although Eloise married a respectable man in the original book, actress Claudia Jessie does not rule out the possibility that her character's fate will take a different path than that of her on-screen relatives:
“I've always loved that there's this coding that people have with Eloise. There's a strength in her that I think a queer storyline can connect. And I've always been touched by that as a notion with Eloise. But yeah, there's definitely room for all of that.”
Many Fans Thought Eloise Was Queer in Season 1
Fans noticed Eloise's "queer vibes" back in the first season, claiming that they were sure she would turn out to be gay. And some fans even believed that she would have a romantic relationship with Penelope Featherington, but it turns out that she has a very different fate and that it is connected to Colin.
“Eloise very much fits the trope of a young lady figuring herself out, wanting independence, almost with an outright hate for men, who doesn’t like dresses or traditional “womanly things.” [...] I want her to be gay very badly. It would be interesting to see how it’s reflected within that time period,” Reddit user -pbghosties wrote.
Bridgerton follows modern norms: it's a show with a feminist optic and representation. In these half-real, half-imaginary settings, almost anything is possible: songs by Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift on the soundtrack and scenes with LGBT characters.
And if such a large number of fans and the actress herself saw a queer character in Eloise, then there is a possibility that the fifth Bridgerton child will take exactly this path.
