Bridgerton Season 3 Needs to Avoid This Romance Trope at All Costs
Bridgerton’s new season is approaching, and yet fans are worried that the writers have changed their favorite Polin love story too much.
Bridgerton season 3 is set to skip Benedict’s tale and focus on Colin’s relationship with Penelope, which the show has been building up to for two seasons. Last season ended on quite the cliffhanger – Colin was telling his friends that he would never court Pen, and she overheard his hurtful words.
Season 3 might not have a release date yet, but Netflix has dropped some gorgeous promo photos featuring Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington and Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton. Judging by the images, both leads have gotten a glow-up in the upcoming season, which might be a blessing and a curse at the same time.
Some Reddit users are convinced that Pen’s beautification will serve as one of the reasons Colin will finally notice her, which is not something the majority of the book fandom wants. Pen has lost weight and started dressing differently in Bridgerton season 3, but that’d better have nothing to do with Colin’s sudden feelings.
Let us elaborate. Penelope has been the “ugly duckling” since season 1 mostly because of her low self-esteem and the fact that her mother hasn’t allowed her to be her true authentic self, dressing her up in unflattering colors, ordering her around, and generally making her feel like she’s not important.
While Philippa and Prudence have gotten their moment to shine, Pen has been on the sidelines so far, but she doesn’t want that to be her narrative anymore – she’s determined to find herself a husband who would allow her alter ego to live on in season 3, and that’s exactly why she has changed. She is no longer waiting for Colin, which is ironically the precise moment he notices her as more than just a friend.
Polin’s story shouldn’t be reduced to such superficial things as looks simply because that was never what their relationship was about in the original books by Julia Quinn. In the novel, Penelope and Colin spend a decade apart, maturing and developing, and when they meet after all that time, their chemistry is based on their mental and emotional attraction, not physical.
By the time they fall for each other, both Pen and Colin are two independent people who enjoy each other’s company, and that’s what fans want in Bridgerton season 3. No Cinderella-inspired stories for us, thank you.
