Bridgerton Fans Finally Clock the Mistake That Made S1 So Hard to Rewatch
There’s a reason for everyone to go straight to the second one.
Summary:
- Bridgerton is a Netflix romantic period drama that follows the structure of the novel series it is based on.
- Each season is dedicated to a new Bridgerton sibling, so the first season explored the love story of Daphne, and the second switched to Anthony.
- Many fans consider season 2 to be superior to season 1 because of the higher stakes of the conflict.
It's pretty hard to make a show like Bridgerton controversial in any way, but Netflix and Shonda Rhimes have managed to create some tense moments around what is arguably the most romantic and fairy-tale period drama out there.
Beginning with season 1, many fans of the original novel series by Julia Quinn had to accept the fact that the show would inevitably bring some changes to the story. However, no one expected those changes to be as big as they were in season 2. Many viewers hated the way Shondaland adapted Kate and Anthony's story.
On the one hand, the love triangle between Kate, her sister Edwina and Anthony was stretched way too far. On the other hand, many believe that this is exactly what made the season so intriguing and exciting, and what played a major role in its success over season 1.
Bridgerton Season 2 Is Better Than Season 1
The second season of Bridgerton remains the most successful so far, judging strictly by the number of views and the statistics of the audience engaged with promotional materials from Netflix. The story of Viscount Bridgerton and the love of his life, Miss Kate Sharma, left no one indifferent. People either loved it with their whole breast or hated the only premise of it.
But no matter what the actual reason for such strong emotions is, it's exactly what drives many viewers to come back to the show again and again, often skipping the rewatch of the first season altogether.
While discussing the matter with other fans on the r/Bridgerton subreddit, Redditor Super_Living_6075 pointed out the exact reason:
“The conflict for the couple in S2 is external as well as internal. <...> For Daphne and Simon, the conflict turned internal after they wed. The stakes shrank. Family wasn’t impacted. Standing wasn’t impacted. It was just between them and so it kind of muted their friction and the potential fallout from it,” they said.
However, not everyone agrees with this statement. As much as people love drama and conflict, some found the story of cheating on one's sister to be way out of line with their morals. Others simply enjoy happier and more lighthearted stories, and season 2 was way too full of trauma for them.
No matter which season you like best, Bridgerton is far from over.
The show has already been renewed for two more seasons, and one of them is getting closer by the day. To join Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington on their journey to face their feelings for each other, be sure to tune in to Netflix on May 16th for the grand premiere of Bridgerton season 3.
