Barack Obama Didn’t Star in Game of Thrones Creators’ New Show for the Funniest Reason
Yes, Game of Thrones’ D&D actually reached out to the 44th US President asking him to star in their new series. He refused, but his response was genuinely funny.
Summary:
- After Game of Thrones, its creators Benioff and Weiss moved on to Netflix to work on their upcoming show 3 Body Problem.
- D&D reached out to Barack Obama, the 44th US President, to ask him for a guest appearance in their new series.
- The ex-POTUS rejected the offer but gave the showrunners a few laughs with his witty response.
Cameos are fun, especially when you know how to cook them. Benioff and Weiss, the famous and notorious Game of Thrones showrunners, don’t have the best track record when it comes to guest appearances in their shows: after all, it was their call to cast an entire Ed Sheeran as an unnamed Lannister soldier to please their star.
But while that decision was largely booed, it didn’t prevent D&D from reaching for more high-profile cameos — and next time, they wanted an entire ex-President.
Obama’s 3 Body Problem Was Not Meant to Be
After Game of Thrones’ (lackluster) finale, Benioff and Weiss moved on to the next big thing: their upcoming Netflix series 3 Body Problem. Huge, ambitious, and unfathomably expensive, the sci-fi TV show will be released on March 21, 2024 — but when you tune in for it in two days’ time, it won’t have its biggest star.
Because the 44th President of the US refused to make an appearance.
“[Barack Obama] did sign a very funny note when we tried to get him for a cameo. It was to the effect of, ‘In case there ever is a real alien invasion, I think I should probably save myself for that crisis.’ He wants to keep his powder dry in case there's a real thing,” Benioff and Weiss told USA Today.
Biggest 3 Body Problem Mystery Remains Unsolved
Unlike the notorious Ed Sheeran cameo in Game of Thrones, Barack Obama in 3 Body problem actually would have made sense. It’s not rare that in the case of an overwhelming crisis, acting officials reach out to their predecessors for advice; perhaps, the fictional US President would have wanted to consult with Obama.
Sadly, there will be no real-life POTUS for the 3 Body Problem viewers. Sadder yet because we don’t know about you, but we’d be very interested to learn how much money Netflix would have offered to have an entire ex-President star in their show! On one hand, it’s a huge appearance for ratings; on the other hand, he’s not an actor.
