Alien: Romulus And 3 More Anticipated Horror Movies to Watch in Theatres in August
There's never a bad time to watch another horror flick.
Halloween is still three months away, but you can already get a proper scare – with another Alien movie, an evil artificial intelligence, and a remake of the 1994 cult classic.
1. The Crow
Release Date: August 23
Young Eric Draven and his girlfriend were killed by criminals. But Eric rose from the dead – invulnerable and very angry. Now he will kill, and his revenge will be terrible.
The viewers are hungry for new stories and tired of remakes, but both The Crow movies are adaptations of the same comic book, so another creator is entitled to a new interpretation. And while no one can compete with Brandon Lee as Eric, the sinister Bill Skarsgard (who played the clown from It) is one of the few who has a chance to at least come close.
But where the new The Crow will most likely lose out to the original 1994 film is in style. Director Alex Proyas turned Detroit into an ominous but charming city of mysticism and lawlessness 30 years ago. The trailer for the new The Crow by Rupert Sanders greets us with a Post Malone song and takes us through a typical dark Gotham without any special features.
2. Cuckoo
Release Date: August 9
Gretchen moves with her father and his new family to a mountain resort in Germany. The teenage girl works as a receptionist and suffers from loneliness and terrifying cries from the woods that only she can hear. The girl is frightened not only by something in the trees, but also by strange visitors to the hotel who are unsure of Gretchen's psychological stability.
Cuckoo is a movie from the independent film company Neon, which recently brought us Longlegs. Cuckoo was screened at the Berlin Film Festival in February and was very well received by critics, who noted the film's mix of body horror, paranoid thriller and giallo elements and praised actress Hunter Schafer in the lead role.
Release Date: August 16
The movie will tell the story of a deadly alien monster that kills people and infects those it doesn't kill with its embryos. This time, the story takes place between Alien and Aliens and tells of young colonists who have explored an abandoned space station and found the reason for its abandonment.
Alien: Romulus is an attempt to return to the roots of the franchise after two strange, controversial and pretentious prequels by Ridley Scott. The director of the new film, Fede Alvarez, specializes in horror films, and judging by the trailer, Romulus will be very similar to the original Alien, at least in atmosphere.
4. Afraid
Release Date: August 30
AIA is an artificial intelligence that controls a smart home and the daily routine of an entire family. Gradually, AIA gains more and more power and intelligence, and starts to "protect" the family members by violently dealing with offenders, and increasingly resembles not an AI, but an evil spirit that has moved into the house.
For now, Afraid reminds M3GAN – a horror movie about evil technologies, only this time the AI does not have a physical body, but only cameras throughout the house.
