Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Eerie Spider-Man Hint Doesn't Make Sony's Villain-Verse Plans Any Clearer
Will the Sony-verse last long without Spider-Man?
Sony's finally dropped trailer for Kraven the Hunter, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who portrays the titular character, made an intriguing comment on social media. In his Instagram he posted a Story saying “Spider-Man... I'm coming for you.”
The fun part is that there is currently no Spidey to address this message to. At the moment, the only live-action Spider-Man resides within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU ), thanks to an agreement between Sony and Disney.
When it comes to Sony's solo ventures, such as Venom, Morbius, and now Kraven the Hunter, the absence of Spider-Man poses a notable challenge.
Years ago, Sony had ambitious plans to bring the infamous Sinister Six to the big screen. This group of iconic Spider-Man villains was intended to have their own standalone film as part of the Amazing Spider-Man series.
Unfortunately, due to various reasons, the Amazing Spider-Man franchise fell through, leaving the Sinister Six plans in limbo.
It looks like Sony is still thinking about putting together the Sinister Six at some point. The team will include Venom, Morbius, Kraven, Vulture (since he ended up in their universe), possibly Rhino, and another mystery member. But again, the Sony-verse has all these Spider-Man villains but no Spider-Man.
One potential solution for Sony is to introduce Miles Morales. Amy Pascal, the producer of almost everything related to Spider-Man, has recently stated that the live-action movie about Miles Morales is in the works.
They might bring back Toby Maguire or Andrew Garfield as a mentor for young Miles. It would actually be a great decision, except for one little issue.
Sony's approach in their portrayal of villains as antiheroes is another major problem. These characters have traditionally been villains in the Spider-Man comics, but Sony seems to be giving them a different light in their own cinematic universe.
While it provides a fresh take on these iconic villains, it also strays from their original comic book roots and, importantly, their connection to Spider-Man.
Take Kraven the Hunter. From what we’ve seen in the trailer, Kraven is now, what appears to be, an animal activist. He hurts people, but he doesn’t hurt animals, he is a good guy now.
This approach makes it really difficult to figure out what kind of problem all these “villains” will have with Spider-Man if they team up against him.
