Welcome to the billion-dollar club!

There's no denying that animated films are a favorite with audiences. Not only children enjoy cartoons, but sometimes the main audience for them is actually adults. And when a new one comes out, especially from a giant like Disney, you don't think twice but book a ticket immediately.

However, during the past six years Disney had some struggles making money with its movies. But thanks to Moana 2, bad luck seems to have come to an end.

The sequel to 2016 hit Moana, the new chapter was able to finally hit the $1 billion benchmark. And this would be the first time since Frozen 2 when a Disney movie achieved that milestone.

The animated sequel has grossed $445 million domestically and $567 million internationally for a total of $1.009 billion worldwide after 8 weekends in theaters.

What Is Moana 2 About?

Picking up three years after the first film, the new movie finds Moana as the leader of the Motunui people. She now has a little sister called Simea who's just as curious as she was at a younger age. But Moana still doesn't want to settle down and dreams of finding more tribes in the seas of Oceania.

So when she finds a piece of a vase that she believes belongs to other people, she forms a crew and together they take to the seas to find the truth.

Along the way, Moana is reunited with the demigod Maui, who helps her throughout her journey. There are many times when they all think it's impossible to succeed, but time and again they do, and in the end they defeat Nalo, the god responsible for all the terrible things that have happened to the people of the islands of Oceania.

There were a lot of doubts when it was announced that Moana 2 would be a movie and not a series for Disney+, but in the end they were happy that the creators went that way.

“Moana 2 is easily Disney's best recent sequel. I mean think about it. Moana 2 is very faithful to the original and doesn't try to retcon or reinterpret anything. The whole relationship between Moana and Simea stood out as the heart of the movie, the visuals were top-notch and the music may not have caught on but I'd argue is very high quality,” Redditor PerformanceNew8364 said.

Moana 2 will soon be available to stream on Disney+.
