5 Thrillers to Keep You on Edge Until The Last Second
These movies are the definition of their genre and will keep you hooked until the credits roll.
Writing a gripping screenplay is a difficult task in itself, but writing a story that will make viewers hold their breath for the entire running time of the movie, and only tighten its grip as the story unfolds, is pure art.
And it is especially crucial for thrillers, because if the viewer becomes bored and uninterested, it is an instant failure for them, as it is literally in the name of the genre to keep them engaged.
Luckily, these five movies managed to do the job perfectly, leaving no time to breathe a sigh of relief even after the credits rolled.
Prisoners (2013)
Denis Villeneuve's tale of the lengths to which desperate parents will go to find their missing children builds in tension with each passing minute.
Featuring an all-star cast including Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano and others, you will find yourself changing your perspective on what is going on more than once during the course of the film.
Memento (2001)
The now-legendary Christopher Nolan immediately established himself as not your typical director with only his second film.
With its non-linear narrative, Memento is like a puzzle that you have to solve for yourself, which is even better on a second viewing.
And the solid performances by Guy Pearce and Carrie-Anne Moss are definitely worth seeing again.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Yorgos Lanthimos is known for making strange movies, and this one is no exception.
In a nod to ancient Greek tragedy, the story revolves around a family struck by some kind of mysterious curse caused by a strange boy from the father's past.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the movie has an eerie feel to it that lingers until the credits roll, and is worth a watch if you're a fan of Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman.
Gone Girl (2014)
With some pretty strong performances from Ben Affleck and especially Rosamund Pike, this twisty tale of a woman who goes missing with some unforeseen consequences for her husband is well worth your time.
If you liked David Fincher's previous works, you will most likely enjoy this one as well.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Jake Gyllenhaal completely steals every scene he is in with his portrayal of the sleazy Louis Bloom, an ex-thief turned freelance photojournalist.
Throughout the film, you will wonder just how far this soulless individual will go as he pushes the envelope in his quest for success.
