The Vampire Diaries had a large number of charismatic characters who attracted viewers. However, there were also those who inspired real hatred among fans due to their selfish or inconsistent behavior.
Isobel Flemming
Isobel was Alaric's wife and Elena's biological mother. Fans hated her for selfish behavior and indifference to those who loved her.
She left Elena, then met and married Alaric, but became so interested in the supernatural that found Damon and convinced him to make her a vampire, while Alaric thought that she was dead.
John Gilbert
John had been trying to establish his own order in the Gilbert family. He was sure that Jenna was a bad guardian for Elena and Jeremy and that Alaric, who was loyal to the vampires, had no place in their house.
He started blackmailing him to tell Jenna about werewolves and vampires, while Jenna's attention was drawn to the oddities in Alaric's behavior, which eventually led to their fight. So it's no surprise that the fans unanimously hated him.
Esther Mikaelson
Esther was resurrected in Mystic Falls to reunite the family but actually she wanted to kill her children. She bonded them all with a spell, if one died, all the rest died, too.
Esther decided to create another Original vampire who would hate all vampires and would like to exterminate them, and Alaric became the main candidate.
Esther was hated by fans because she wanted to kill the charismatic members of the Mikaelson family and drag the fan-favorite Alaric into it.
Lily Salvatore
Seeing the Salvatore brothers' mother was a big surprise, since she must have been dead for at least a hundred years. However, when she first appeared in front of Damon and Elena, Lily looked a little dull and lost.
Lily's appearance was remembered by the plot twist, but not by the character herself. Damon and Stefan's mother made it clear that she didn't have any motherly feelings for them, as she cared much more for the Heretics.
Sybil
Sybil was the main antagonist of season 8. After being freed from the Armory and thanks to clues left by Enzo, Bonnie was able to discover that Sybil was actually a Siren who corrupted and enslaved those who got in her way.
Sybil explained that she was instructed to collect evil souls, so she subjugated Damon and Enzo to her will to serve her in the capture of sinners.
Many fans agree that such a fantastic creature as a Siren could be revealed in a very interesting way. Instead, Sybil just annoyed the audience with her actions.
