4 Shows Like Severance to Watch While Waiting for Season 2
Another seven months to go…
When a new show premieres and suddenly becomes a huge hit, the sequel announcement is only a matter of time. And usually it happens next year, so you only have to wait a year or so. But sometimes things go wrong... Like with Severance.
The AppleTV+ show was released in 2022 and quickly conquered all fans of mystery and creepy deep drama. Starring Adam Scott, the show tells the strange story of life in two different dimensions: professional and personal. And Severance is a surgical procedure that leaves the memories of each word separated from each other.
The original premise, perfect cast and lovable characters, as well as unique and unpredictable storyline and torturous cliffhangers – these are just a few things that make the show perfect. But as the latest teaser claims, the release date for the second season is January 17, which is not soon.
So while there's still time, why not check out these 4 Severance-esque series?
1. The Leftovers (2014-2017)
The first show you might want to check out is definitely this forgotten gem that has an almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%. Most fans admit that the two shows have a similar creepy vibe, as well as the most unexpected twists and turns in the storyline.
The show follows a group of people from a small New York community who now have to continue their lives in a world where an unknown disaster has taken away 2% of the world's population. The show is full of questions that have no easy answers. The show is horribly confronting and painful to watch at times, yet we can't find a way to look away.
2. Maniac (2018)
Another mind-bender is this limited series starring Emma Stone, Jonah Hill and Sonoya Mizuno. Like in Severance, we realize pretty quickly that something terrible is going on, but it takes a while to understand what exactly and to start connecting all the dots.
At the center of the story are two strangers who are connected to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial for a drug that they are assured will permanently solve all their problems without any complications or side effects. But of course, everything goes wrong…
“It's gorgeous, deep, sweet, sad, clever, and so much more. I'm really surprised that I haven't heard much regarding the show, it made a bit of a splash when it arrived but quickly disappeared. It's not really a "try and figure out what's going on" show like Legion or Westworld. It very plainly places its cards on the table and respects the viewer,” Redditor timeduck said.
3. The Magicians (2015-2020)
The Magicians is another perfect show for the fans of Severance that has a creepy and disturbing world and gives off nihilistic and dystopian vibes. It also has a creepy vibe that hints something is wrong but you can’t quite get what exactly.
The series follows a group of students who are recruited to a secretive academy, where they find out that magic is actually a very real deal. But it’s not all about fairies and stardust, as they are going to realize pretty soon. Magic is really dangerous in their world. The show is full of cliffhangers that will make you want to finish it in one sitting.
4. Mr. Robot (2015-2019)
This Rami Malek-led crime thriller definitely deserves your time if you still haven’t seen it. He plays the part of a young man named Elliot, who has a brilliant mind, but is really unstable mentally.
The man is a cyber-security engineer during the day, but when the night comes he turns into this vigilante hacker. Tired from this life of his, he decided to take down a global tech corrupt company…
“First episode is a lot flashier than the rest of the show, but from there on out it gets weirder and extremely surreal. It's my favorite show on TV and the first half of season 2 is considered nonsense by some people, but if you like extensive dream sequences and a dose of pure insanity you'll be a fan,” Redditor AllocatedData said.
