From Dracula to Augusto Pinochet.

With each new year, the classic image of the vampire is increasingly reconstructed – the vampire is no longer a pale romantic hero, but often a comic and absurd creature trying to find his place in the world.

1. Renfield

100 years ago, Renfield arrived at Count Dracula's castle. An aristocrat in expensive clothes turned the boy into a vampire and made him his slave. Over time, the relationship between them has become toxic: Renfield is tired of bringing innocent victims to Dracula and has long dreamed of a quiet life.

The creators of Renfield have reinterpreted the classic story of Dracula in an unusual way. On the one hand, it is a drama about an abusive relationship, and on the other hand, it is a bloody action movie with wild action scenes: the characters rip each other's arms off and break their enemies' necks with a single blow.

2. El Conde

The head of the Chilean military junta, Augusto Pinochet, didn't really die – he faked his death. The tyrant was always a vampire and only those close to him knew it.

Having lost his power, the old man spends time in a country house and is considering committing suicide: all he has to do is stop drinking blood.

El Conde is an unusual biopic about the life and death of a dictator. Director Pablo Larrain mixes real-life details of the darkest period in Chilean history with black comedy featuring blood cocktails and hilarious conversations between the dying Pinochet and his relatives.

3. Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person

Growing up in a family of vampires, Sasha is different from her relatives. She does not have fangs and refuses to kill or drink the blood of victims. While Sasha feeds on bags of blood, she cannot continue this for long – she has to start hunting. And then the girl meets a lonely guy, Paul, who is thinking about suicide.

Director Ariane Louis-Seize definitely knows a thing or two about the vampire canon. In her feature debut you can find traces of What We Do in the Shadows and Twilight.

There are brutal scenes in this bloody cocktail, but they are unlikely to scare anyone – this is rather a dark rom-com for those who are tired of the same old movies and are looking for something new.

4. Last Voyage of the Demeter

The cargo ship Demeter is sailing from Transylvania to London. The crew includes the captain, his assistant Wojchek, doctor Clemens, and several other adventurers. At first glance, it seems like an ordinary trip, but it is fraught with danger.

The crew faces a fight for survival: Dracula is hiding somewhere on the deck. The sailors will have to fight a powerful monster, and Count’s victim Anna will help them – Dracula has taken her on a journey like a walking blood bag.

Director Andre Ovredal took on a difficult task: a short episode from Bram Stoker's work was stretched into a whole movie – all the action takes place on an old ship, which means there is nowhere to hide from the threat. Unfortunately, there is not enough action for two hours: the dark survival movie gets a bit boring towards the end.
