29 Years Later, Best Crime Movie With 94% on RT Is Getting a Sequel
It's always a burning question whether a sequel is something the viewers need, but in this case there's no doubt – we do.
Michael Mann's Heat, released in 1995, is one of the best crime dramas in the history of cinema and one of the few collaborations between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
The movie is almost 30 years old, and with each passing year, it becomes clearer that the movie fully deserves its cult status. And now that it will be getting a sequel soon, it’s time to refresh the memories!
Heat is One of the Most Realistic Movies About Police & Mafia
The two Hollywood giants form an amazing synergy on screen, and it is impossible to tear yourself away from their intense battle – both psychological and physical. Michael Mann's film has become one of the most realistic when it comes to depicting the work of the police and the mafia.
This authenticity did not come out of nowhere – Heat is based on the true story of a cop named Chuck Adamson and a criminal named Neil McCauley he was chasing in the 60s.
Chuck Adamson became a writer after retiring from the force and worked on the scripts for the TV show Miami Vice. The director was impressed by Adamson's stories about his police work and used them in Heat.
In addition, Adamson provided Mann with an actual recording of his conversation with McCauley – this recording is used almost verbatim in the film's most famous scene, the conversation between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro's characters in a restaurant.
Mann Plans to Make Heat 2 Based on His Own Novel
In 2022, the director co-wrote the novel Heat 2 with Meg Gardiner, which is both a prequel and a sequel to the 1995 film. Mann has publicly stated that he would like to make a feature film out of it.
The book also features Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis, who were played in the movie by Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer. In the new Heat, however, the actors will have to be replaced due to their age.
The director recently confirmed his intentions to make Heat 2 in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Mann is already finishing the script and intends to start shooting in late 2024 or early 2025. However, when asked if rumors were true that Adam Driver and Austin Butler will appear in the roles previously played by De Niro and Kilmer, the director replied:
“I can’t talk about that.”
Mann also noted that in order to shoot the second Heat, the movie must have box office potential in modern conditions. But the director has no doubts: Mann is convinced that the first Heat is still being watched, revisited and discussed almost 30 years after its release. And it's hard to argue with that.
