Fans of the genre know that there's nothing better than Asian horror movies.

Some countries love comedy, others love Disney animation, and in South Korea, audiences have a particular weakness for the horror genre. That's why the country's highest grossing movie of the year so far is director Jang Jae-Hyun's horror Exhuma.

It has everything you need: shamans with ritual tattoos on their skin, Oldboy star Choi Min-sik, bloody tears and ripped out guts. Basically, everything we love about Asian horror movies.

What Is Exhuma About?

When the newborn of a wealthy Korean family in Los Angeles falls ill with a mysterious disease, the head of the family brings a shaman and her assistant from Seoul. The shaman immediately identifies the problem: a hereditary curse whose roots go back to the historical homeland, and more specifically to the grave of the client's grandfather, which is strangely located in a remote rural area on top of a mountain.

Now it has to be dug up, and two other experts have to be brought in for the job — a master of funeral affairs and, most importantly, a respected specialist in Feng Shui.

This case promises not only a solid reward, but also big problems for all participants: the grandfather was a Japanese collaborator, and the place of his burial in a remote area was obviously not chosen by chance.

Exhuma Suggests Fresh Look at Ancient Legends

The main achievement of the director is that he managed to present the legends and rituals of ancient times as a relevant plot. Jang Jae-Hyun does not show national rituals, feng shui and shamanism as relics of the past, but demonstrates how they are integrated into modern times.

The shaman's arsenal includes not only canisters of horse blood, but also a wireless microphone, angry spirits use cell phones, and the Feng Shui specialist never parts with his iqos.

But Exhuma will not only surprise you with a fresh look at shamanism and various creepy rituals, it will also frighten you by posing questions that will send shivers down your spine. What or who is hidden in a coffin twice the size of a man? Whose silhouette appears in an old photograph? And how did it happen that evil spirits can make phone calls?

Where to Stream Exhuma?
