Luckily, the curiosity and willingness to explore important topics won over.

While the central premise of 1923 remained the same as that of Yellowstone, focusing primarily on the Dutton family's struggle for and work on their ranch, some of the additional storylines shocked viewers with the honest cruelty in the depiction of the time period.

The show does not shy away from showing the ugliest sides of what colonists have done to indigenous people over the years.

While this is admirable from an educational standpoint and does justice to the memory of those who suffered, the scenes of abuse can also be very triggering.

Not only for those watching from the comfort of their own homes, but also for those filming and experiencing the events themselves.

In fact, the script and role description were almost too painful for actress Aminah Nieves to endure.

Although Yellowstone's universe was so successful that being a part of it was almost a promised breakthrough for any young actor, Nieves was not sure she could do it, and for good reason.

“I read it and was emailing my manager like, “I don’t know man. I don’t know if I should do this. It’s just heavy and triggering.” My manager was so supportive and said, “You know what? I support anything you do so whatever decision you make is a good one,” the actress said in an interview with Deadline.

Unfortunately, in a series like this, there was no way for the actress to ease into the filming process: for her character, Teonna Rainwater, there wasn't a single day without enduring more and more brutality. However, as Nieves later revealed in the same interview, she found a way to heal.

Also, the encouragement of the show's creator, Taylor Sheridan, must have helped her feel better about the role.

The good news is that 1923 has been renewed for Season 2, so there is a good chance that Aminah Nieves will return as Teonna Rainwater and explore the character more deeply, outside of the constant brutality at school. Stay tuned to not miss any news or updates!
